Susruta samhita vol 2
The Suruta-samhit is one of the twin compendia of Ayurveda encompassing all the aspects prevalent traditionally in India and abroad since the earliest times. It represents faithfully the school of surgery which made significant contributions to principles and techniques of surgery which are surprisingly applicable even in modern era. It presents the status of ancient Indian surgery comprehensively and as such is in great demand among scholars all over the world. The present edition of the Suruta-samhita is singular in the sense that, besides presenting faithful translation of the text, it brings forth, for the first time, the English translation of the Nibandha-sangraha commentary by Dalhana who is regarded as the authority on the subject. The commentary supplements the text in many respects and as such proves an essential tool for understanding the samhita clearly and fully. Notes are also given here and there to elaborate the ideas with critical analysis. The text has also been checked and modified according to the readings accepted by Dalhaa. Plants and other substances are also identified * as interpreted by Dalhana. At the end of the text appendices are given which are very useful.Complete in 3 Vols.

The author frunishes names, synonyms, names in different regions, properties and actions, tests, etc. of drugs of all categories (vegetable, animal andmineral origin). Apart from the drugs which are in use since long, many new oneswhich have come to India through western countries and those used in Unani systemof medicine have also been incorporated in this text. Hence Bhavamira is given thecredit for enlarging the materia medica of Ayurveda with addition of new drugs. This portion of the text is known popularly as Bhvapraka nighantu and has been published seperately with detailed notes by many present day scholars. Madhya Khanda-Middle/second section has 71 chapters dealing with the nidana (aetiology), lakaa (symptomatology), samprpti (pathogenesis) sdhyasdhyat (prognosis) and cikitsa (treatment) of all diseases, with greater emphasis on Kya cikits (inner medicine). Both Kthauadha (formulae from vegetable drugs) and Rasausadha (formulae from mercury and minerals) are mentioned in the treatment. Uttara Khanda-Third and last section has only two chapters, one dealing with Vjkaraa cikitsa (virilification therapy) and the other with Rasayana cikitsarejuvinatory therapy). ( Commentaries Till now only two commentaries in Sanskrit on Bhvapraka are known-1. First one which has no specific name is available in full and printed along with the text.2. Second commentary by name "Sadvaidya siddhanta ratnkara" is written by Jayadeva, son of Jayakrisna on the orders of Maharaja Ranavira Simha, king of Kashmir". This is incomplete and its manuscript is in the library of Jammu.Regarding the first commentary available now, there are doubts about its authorship among the present day scholars, since there is no mention in it. Some scholars opine that Bhavamira the author of the text is also the commentator; some others say, the traditional belief is that Bhvamira wrote only a tippai (short notes/ gloss) and not an eloborate commentary like the one now available; yet others hold the view that the commentator is a person different from Bhavamira and has chosen to remain incognito.1.
