Social Problems in India
The agony of being burned alive is unimaginable and, for those who survive this brutal assault, the pain continues for a lifetime. In India, the burden of this insidious act falls primarily on women who are often attacked by their husbands. For survivors, life is dramatically different than before the assault. They are scarred and disfigured, sometimes beyond recognition. They are even singled out for differential treatment and are sometimes even believed to hold evil supernatural powers. They are the victims of stigma. When a woman is burned, the attack is only the beginning of a long and painful journey through life. Following the physical pain of the burns, the surgeries, and the subsequent scarring comes the worst part: living with disfigurement. This study attempts to make sociological sense of the stories of Indian women who have been attacked with fire by their husbands. The data show that after women are attacked by kerosene-laced fire, they experience two more traumas in their lives. First, society changes their identities. They are no longer "a woman," instead they are transformed into a "burned woman." Second, because that identity change is dramatic and permanent, disfigured women to varying degrees are socially ex-communicated and treated as pariahs. The present study seeks to determine how and why disfigurement stigma happens in India and the consequences of that stigma on the lives of burned women. Frankenstein BA 4th Sem
First published in 1818, reprinted in 1823, revised and reissued in 1831, Frankenstein has since seen a series of re-workings. Read variously as a cautionary fable against faustian ambition, a feminist critique of "male" science/Romanticism, an allegorization of class relations or an ambivalent exploration of human psyche, Frankenstein invites (re)interpretation. This critical edition, based on 1818 text, places novel within its multiple intermeshed histories. The editor's introduction frames text in terms of biographical echoes, intellectual debates and intertextual refrerences while considering the politics of its composition, revision, and reception. Besides contemporary reviews and generic debates, this edition also carries two shorter fictions that complement Frankenstein- Marry Shalley's "The Mortal Immortal" and John Polidori's "The Vampyre".Maya Joshi teaches English at Lady Shriram College, Delhi University.
Moll Flanders BA 4th Sem
“To give the history of a wicked life repented of, necessarily requires that the wicked part should be make as wicked as the real history of it will bear, to illustrate and give a beauty to the penitent part.”Moll Flanders is a novel by Daniel Defoe, written in the picaresque style, first published in 1722. Purporting to be the true account of the life of the eponymous Moll, the novel is based partially on the life of Moll King, a London criminal whom Defoe met while visiting Newgate Prison.Born and abandoned in Newgate Prison, Moll is forced to make her own way in 17th-century England. The lady’s irreverent, boisterous account of her life is delivered with engaging humour and candour, as she details her escapades which include husband-hunting, bigamy, prostitution and pick-pocketing. Without doubt one of the most memorable female narrators in the history of the English novel, Moll’s sensational tale ultimately keeps us guessing as to her final nature; true penitent or successful hustler, we can't help rooting for her, regardless.
