This edition features more information on plant biochemistry, a new chapter on genetic engineering, gene manipulation, and viruses and gene rearrangements. Extensive updating and revision throughout.
Agriculture
Agriculture or farming is the most important human economic activities. It differs from other industries in that it is a biological process : the primary products are organic and the resource base is the physical environment of land, water and air. One of the principal aims of agriculture is to channel as much as possible of the energy from incoming solar radiation into selected crops and/or livestock through efficient management practices and to minimise that used by such potential competitors as weeds and pests. The physical resource base determines the range of use to which land can be most economically put to agriculture at a particular time and natural variability of the physical environment makes agriculture one of the most unpredictable human activities.
