The purpose of this Handbook is to provide guidelines for designing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, with reference to the Companies Act, 2013. Some companies were supporting socially and environmentally useful developmental activities much before the enactment of the Companies Act, 2013. The Act has not only made CSR spend mandatory for all the companies registered in India but laid down some rules on how to allocate the CSR spend. Many companies are looking for guidance on how to interpret the CSR related provisions in the Companies Act, 2013 and how to apply these provisions to their particular business, what kind of activities can be covered under CSR ambit. This Handbook is made available to get clarity on these predicaments. It not only gives comprehensive information on legal aspects, regulations and government notifications but also gives insight for implementation of activities under the framework of the Companies Act, 2013. This Handbook will be useful to: • Board of Directors, top management, senior and middle level management of companies of all sizes – whether large or small – involved in policy making and implementation of CSR projects. It will give valuable inputs to policy makers of the companies and all personnel concerned with planning, budgeting, implementing, assessing and reporting CSR. • Civil society and non-government organizations working in partnership with Corporate sector to implement their CSR activities. • Government officials and local administration (line departments) where such activities are performed. IMPORTANT: This Handbook is culmination of information gathered from various sources and is suggestive in nature. It should not be considered exclusivity for implementation of CSR projects. This Handbook consists of Six Parts that can be broadly defined as follows: • Chapter I – An Overview of CSR • Chapter II – An Overview of significant provisions related to CSR

We see application of science everywhere. Whether we are aware or not, science application plays a big part in our daily lives. While you are reading this page, an important element of optical science is in use. Electricity, for example, is one of the most important science discoveries ever made. As we walk in the public, we see almost everyone carrying a cellular phone. This is an application of electronics & communications technology. To remain healthy, we use medicines, which is a specialised form of biology. It is only the knowledge of science which enables us to understand the life processes around us. V&S Publishers has brought for you dictionaries of terms in science, physics, chemistry and biology to make science simpler for you. The terms have been arranged alphabetically for quick reference. Suitable explanations of terms that have come into public domain recently also find mention. The standard of explanation has been kept at a level of understanding expected from an average secondary and senior secondary student. Illustrations and examples, at appropriate places, have been given. Readers who have not made a special study of any science subject will have also be able to grasp the definitions. Important scientific charts, tables, constants, conversion tables, etc., have been included as appendices to make this dictionary more useful. A glossary of Nobel Prize winners and their contributions is an added attraction.

Brilliant Blunders

Brilliant Blunders

Drawing on the lives of five renowned scientists, Mario Livio shows how even these geniuses made major mistakes and how their errors were an essential part of the process of achieving scientific breakthroughs. We all make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. And that includes five of the greatest scientists in history—Charles Darwin, William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Linus Pauling, Fred Hoyle, and Albert Einstein. But the mistakes that these great luminaries made helped advance science. Indeed, as Mario Livio explains, science thrives on error, advancing when erroneous ideas are disproven. As a young scientist, Einstein tried to conceive of a way to describe the evolution of the universe at large, based on General Relativity—his theory of space, time, and gravity. Unfortunately he fell victim to a misguided notion of aesthetic simplicity. Fred Hoyle was an eminent astrophysicist who ridiculed an emerging theory about the origin of the universe that he dismissively called “The Big Bang.” The name stuck, but Hoyle was dead wrong in his opposition. They, along with Darwin (a blunder in his theory of Natural Selection), Kelvin (a blunder in his calculation of the age of the earth), and Pauling (a blunder in his model for the structure of the DNA molecule), were brilliant men and fascinating human beings. Their blunders were a necessary part of the scientific process. Collectively they helped to dramatically further our knowledge of the evolution of life, the Earth, and the universe.

The last thorough revision of Rutley's Elements of Mineralogy appeared as the 23rd Edition in 1936. In subsequent editions, an effort to keep abreast with the great progress in the science was made by small (and often awkward) modifications and, especially, by the addition of an independent chapter on the atomic structure of minerals. For this present edition, the complete re-setting of the book has made possible not only the integration of the added chapter on atomic structure into its proper place in the accounts of the chemical and physical properties of minerals, but also extensive rewriting and rearrangement of the material in the first part of the book. To this part, also, has been added a short chapter on the classification of minerals. In the second part, the Descrip tion of Minerals, numerous, if not so extensive, modifications and modernisations have been introduced. A couple of dozen new figures have been added, mostly in the early part of the book. More specifically, the major changes in this new edition are the following. The electronic structure of atoms supplies the guide lines for the whole account of mineral-chemistry; additional items concern the electrochemical series, of interest in the occurrence and metallurgical treatment of ores, and chemical analysis. On the physical side, the dependence of physical properties of minerals on their atomic structure is emphasized and, in addition, a brief account of radioactivity and isotopic age-determination is given.
