“To give the history of a wicked life repented of, necessarily requires that the wicked part should be make as wicked as the real history of it will bear, to illustrate and give a beauty to the penitent part.”Moll Flanders is a novel by Daniel Defoe, written in the picaresque style, first published in 1722. Purporting to be the true account of the life of the eponymous Moll, the novel is based partially on the life of Moll King, a London criminal whom Defoe met while visiting Newgate Prison.Born and abandoned in Newgate Prison, Moll is forced to make her own way in 17th-century England. The lady’s irreverent, boisterous account of her life is delivered with engaging humour and candour, as she details her escapades which include husband-hunting, bigamy, prostitution and pick-pocketing. Without doubt one of the most memorable female narrators in the history of the English novel, Moll’s sensational tale ultimately keeps us guessing as to her final nature; true penitent or successful hustler, we can't help rooting for her, regardless.
